The authors use in-situ electron microscopy to observe in real time the growth of cuprous oxide pyramids during the (100) Cu oxidation.These observations indicate that these oxides initially have a square structure that, as the growth continues, transforms into Stepped Pyramid. Atomic force microscopy shows that these oxide pyramids have a hollow structure. The authors propose a simple elastic-plastic deformation mechanism to explain the formation of this novel structure.
