First, the question raised: In 1986 the college entrance examination examined the application of a spiral micrometer to measure the length of the object. The college entrance examination was repeated four years later to reproduce this question again. The title is: Figure 1 shows the measurement of the diameter of a small steel ball with a spiral micrometer. The reading should be __mm (Figure 1). This question requires the examinee to correctly understand the construction principle of the spiral micrometer and the accuracy of the measurement, and can use a valid digital representation to correctly represent the measured value. According to the analysis of candidates’ examination papers in the province of Fujian Province in 1990, there were 3/4 candidates, the reading was 8.60 mm, and the results were small.
