The basic characteristics and testing techniques of swelling and shrinkage are discussed. The global macro-distribution and swelling and shrinking potential of this type of rock and soil are explored. The interrelationship between clay minerals, especially high sodium montmorillonite and geological environment changes was studied. The movement law and instability mechanism of swelling and contraction slope are analyzed. Reveals the reproducibility of different slope damage under the corresponding internal and external environment. The results show that the instability mechanism contributes to the subsequent research and treatment of similar engineering problems
