Describes a comparison of traction and braking force tests conducted on AC coal lines (EMD’s SD60MAC) and DC locomotives (EMD’s SD40 and SD60) hosted by the American Railway Association at the Northern Burlington Railway in late 1992. The test results show that the AC locomotive has much higher traction and a much greater braking force than the DC locomotive. Although the AC locomotive traction and braking produce longitudinal track force slightly higher than the DC locomotive, but the line and train operation and not much impact. The measurements also show that AC locomotives have much lower lateral orbital forces than DC locomotives, largely due to the radial bogies their fleet can power.
