A comprehensive automation solution was developed for the newly built pickling and cold rolling unit at Bethlehem Steel to meet the high quality requirements of the product. Rolling mill automation based on the neural network model for the pass tables, bending and channeling roll set point, as well as the calculation of flatness dynamic control parameters. The new technologies involved include multivariable tension control, non-linear control of the hydraulic pressure regulation and quick change of the rolling thickness to minimize production losses
