中国在1982年第九届亚运会夺得金牌总数第一;1984年第23届奥运会上一举拿下15面金牌之后,国内外舆论已开始关注在1986年第10届亚运会上,中国运动员能否保持亚洲第一体育强国的桂冠,以及1988年第24届奥运会在有苏联和东欧等国参加的情况下再次取得好成绩。然而目前的情况不能不令人担心,这就是我们的“现役”运动员及后备力量的人数的下降。根据有关材料的并不完全统计,拿奖牌最多的重点项目田径、游泳及我们的优势项目体操、跳水、射击、射箭的一线队伍和后备人数,1984年以来都有下降。如田径下降了8.5%,游泳目前已不足8百人。
