West Germany newspaper industry is under the direct support of the U.S. and British occupation authorities. At present, there are about 1,500 newspapers in West Germany with a total circulation of about 18 million copies; more than 8,000 magazines with a total circulation of about 70 million. Increasing monopoly trend With the resurgence of monopoly capital, newspaper trusts have emerged in West Germany in recent years. Now the strongest force in the press in West Germany is Springer, the newspaper magnate who monopolizes the entire press of Hamburg, the largest city in West Germany. He runs one of the five newspapers in West Germany, the “Le Monde”, which was published in Hamburg, Essen and West Berlin at the same time and distributed a total of about 400,000 copies. Springer also holds some of the most widely circulated West German magazines. According to the judgment of the West German bourgeois press, his publishing house is worth about 200 million deutsche marks, and his newspapers and periodicals account for about one-fifth of the total newspaper and periodical issuance in West Germany. Springer did not hide his reactionary face, he had openly admitted that as a “profitable businessman” he advocated the annexation of Germany. In an article published in the German newspaper Der Spiegel, he said: “I encourage my editor to harass this piece of German land almost daily.”
