Introduction Halogenated butyl rubber is often vulcanized using zinc oxide and sulfur or sulfur accelerators, in addition to the crosslinking systems such as hydroxymethylphenol resin or p-quinone dioxime / zinc oxide. To understand the complex vulcanization process of halogenated butyl rubber, we have investigated the zinc sulfide vulcanization reaction with halides obtained from the chlorination or bromination of 2,2,4,8,8-pentamethyl-4-nonene. This paper presents preliminary research data. Several possible mechanisms have been proposed in literature to cross-link halogenated butyl rubber zinc oxide. In an earlier article, Baldwin et al. Proposed a positive ion mechanism. Subsequently, other authors recommend a mechanism that involves the formation of ether linkages.
