After the Civil War ended, the economy of the United States, like a runaway horse, grew rapidly and jumped to the top of the world in the last 40 years of the 19th century. During World War I, the United States fully demonstrated its own strength on the international stage. After the war, the United States stepped into the so-called golden era of the 1920s. Its economy continued to prosper, its life was generally improved, appliances rapidly spread, and two-thirds of families had cars and enjoyed a peaceful dance and singing. President Hoover has threatened: “The United States is closer than ever to ultimately defeating poverty.”
