On March 10, 1999, Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft Corporation of the United States, came to China again and brought about the “Venus Plan”, which caused a sensation. So, what is the “Venus Plan” and what impact will it bring to China? The article “Unveiling the Venus Plan” was written by Academician Ni Guangnan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, based on industry, academia and public opinion. The discussion was written on the April 25th, 1999 issue of the “Technology Daily”. He pointed out that if we accept Microsoft’s “Venus Plan”, it means that all households in my country must pay a few hundred dollars to Gates. And China’s own technology can completely replace the “Venus plan” and should not allow Microsoft to monopolize the set-top box market in China. Although Microsoft is rich in money, China’s national industry cannot be underestimated. Academician Ni Guangnan is now agreed to publish this article in this journal.
