In modern Chinese, “silence” has two meanings: one is “do not love joking” and the other is “do not speak.” In this article, “silence,” refers to the news interview, the interviewee silent. People often differ in their tolerance of “not speaking” in different cultures. For example, in the United States, if one side of a speaker does not speak for ten seconds, he or she is considered “silent.”
