湘西的土家族能歌善舞,音乐文化悠远流长。“哭嫁歌”是在土家族婚礼中必唱的抒情歌谣,同时也是土家女性展现自我、抒发情怀的重要载体,其曲调取自于山歌和小调,气氛悲切、哀怨忧伤。有人说,哭嫁的习俗起因于女性性别意识的觉醒,这一特性的民族文化其实也表达了土家女性对未来平等生活的要求以及对理想的婚姻家庭生活的不懈追求。可以说土家族哭嫁歌是土家女性群体创作的结晶,是研究土家文化所不可缺少的重要内容。
