最早提出在新式学堂里开设音乐课的人是康有为,1989年他上书光绪帝主张开办学堂,开设“歌乐”科.最早出现的“乐歌”是1902年沈心工在日本编写的《体操——兵操》,又名《男儿第一志气高》.最早创办音乐刊物的是李叔同1906年创办的《音乐小杂志》,上面有他亲手画的贝多芬像和介绍贝多芬的文章,这也是中国介绍德国音乐家贝多芬的开始.最早获得音乐学博士学位的音乐学家是王光祈,他于1933年以《中国古代之歌剧》获得波恩大学博士学位。最早的管弦乐队是1920年肖友梅在北京大学创办的十七人编制的管弦乐队,他任指挥排演过贝多芬的《第六(田园)交响曲》。
