主办奥运成为大热门 北京于1993年以两票之差申办2000年奥运会未能成功,曾使国内外众多的人感到深切的惋惜与遗憾。之后曾有部分国际奥委会委员联名写信给中国方面希望中国继续申办奥运会。北京在沉默了5年后终于决定再次申办,受到了舆论的普遍欢迎。 国际奥委会于1998年12月中在瑞士洛桑召开了执委会。会上宣布,迄今为止,已有9个城市参与申办2008年第29届奥运会的竞争。这些城市是:北京、布宜诺斯艾利斯、开罗、伊斯坦布尔、吉隆坡、大阪、巴黎、塞维利亚和多伦多。这9个城市各具特色,都有相当实力,可以预期这次申办将又是一次激烈的竞争。
