The long consonants in Tungusic language show three significant synchronic features: the distribution is confined to the stems; the syllables are indefinite; the invariance is not affected by the weakening process. The characteristics of long consonants originate from the coupling between short consonants and syllables. Phonological mechanisms involved in the development of long consonants include the assimilation of consonants, the shedding of consonant segments and the compensatory prolongation of segments.
