EMDR is an integrated, client-centered approach to psychotherapy that treats psychological problems that are not pathologically based on organic damage. Its focus is on the brain’s information processing system and memories that plague the experience. EMDR deals with the experiences that lead to clinical distress and also those experiences needed to reach a more healthy psychosocial status. An overview of the history, development and research of EMDR is a largely empirically supported treatment. After elaborating the adaptive information processing model, this article illustrates a case-by-case and eight-stage treatment of EMDR with a continuum of case examples. This method is used to process early memory based on pathology, to trigger early memory of current dysfunction and to provide templates for future appropriate behavior, including knowledge and behavior needed to overcome skills and / or developmental deficits . The benefits of an integrated EMDR and family system perspective are that it provides the most comprehensive treatment.
