晚清时期桐城派代表人物吴汝纶在光绪十五年毅然弃官,改业从教,出任莲池书院山长。这是他一生重要的转折点,当时颇为俗流所不解。对官场越来越抱有厌弃心理,而对颇有根基的文业,则怀蓄着牢不可破的挚爱情结,更有维护和发展由曾国藩嫡传的文派、学派的人生理想,这使吴汝纶做出超俗的抉择。当然,他与官场仍保持着一定联系,留有“回旋”空间和“合作”余地。特别是与直隶总督李鸿章,始终维持着一种非幕似幕、不即不离的微妙关系。吴汝纶弃官从教、执掌莲池书院的经历,是晚清学者追求个人理想、实现人生价值的典型个案,或许有些“标本”的意义。
In the late Qing Dynasty, Wu Ru-lun, a representative of Tongcheng group, decided to abandon his official office in the fifteen year of Emperor Guangxu’s reign and changed his profession from teaching to acting as the chief of the Lianchi College. This is an important turning point in his life, quite popular at that time. More and more discarded psychology toward the officialdom, while for the well-established literary profession, cherish the unbreakable love affair, and more to maintain and develop the ideal of life by the literary school and school ruled by Zeng Guofan, which made Wu Ruilun Absurd choice. Of course, he still maintains a certain relationship with the officialdom, leaving room for “maneuver” and “cooperation”. Wu Ru-lun’s abandonment of official education and the experience of lotus pond academy are the typical cases of late Qing scholars pursuing personal ideal and realizing the value of life, perhaps with some significance of “specimen”.
