松本清張は日本の昭和期の代表的な作家であり、彼の創作のジャンルが多彩豊富である。その中で一番知られているのは彼の推理小説である。彼は推理小説を社会問題と結びつけて、「社会派推理小説」のジャンルを切り開いた。その作品を読んでいると、色彩語が頻繁に使われているのに気づく。文学作品の中に、色彩語は登場人物の気持ち、運命を暗示すること、雰囲気を営み、物語の筋を推進すること、作品のテーマを明らかにすることができる。したがって、色彩語は文学作品の中に大切な役割を果たすと言えよう。松本清張の「動機を主張することがそのまま人間描写に通じるように私は思う」という言葉から、彼が人間描写を重視することがわかる。『ゼロの焦点』の中に、色彩語を使って人間を描写する表現がしばしば出てくる。特に、人間の心理活動を表す顔の表情に関する表現が多い。本稿では、松本清張の初期の推理小説『ゼロの焦点』を研究対象にし、人間描写という角度から色彩語の役割を検討しようと思う。
