By August 18, the number of mobile telephone users in China exceeded 20 mil, of which the numberof the digital users accounted for 13 mil. Starting from November 1987, when the first analog mobilenetwork was introduced in Guangzhou, until July 1997, spanning less than ten years, the number ofmobile users has reached 10 mil. Recent Statistics reveals that the number of the new mobile Subscribersregistered by China Telecom reached another 10 mil.Today, China Telecom’s GSM network has grown into the world lariat GSM network as well asone Of the world best mobile networks in t6rms of the scope of the service offerings and the number ofthe service types. By the end of June, China Telecom’s mobile telephone network has a nationwidecoverage in 31 provinces and major cities, including 308 prefectures and 1856 counties and townships. Inthe eastern parts of China, the coverage has been extended even to villages. At the present stag6 ofdevelopment, China Telecom’s GSM telephony has launched automatic roaming service with 45 GSMoperators in 32 countries.
