Commercial nitrogen fertilizer, at 81.7 million tons, represents about 50% of all nitrogenous soils that arrive on the planet today, providing at least 40% of the population with basic food needs. The challenge before us is to continue helping to meet that need while minimizing the negative impact on the environment by improving the efficiency of nitrogen use. In the United States, nitrogen fertilizer efficiency on corn has increased by more than 30% in nearly 20 years, but there is potential for corn and other crops. In most Asian countries, the current efficiency and productivity of nitrogenous fertilizers are generally lower than those of North America, but they are making efforts to improve them. The fertilizer industry recognizes the key role it plays in meeting the basic needs of humankind today and in the future. It is ready for new challenges, adopting new practices and technologies to increase efficiency, and thus not only supporting human life but also improving the quality of people’s lives.
