地质找矿的重大突破,是指那些能为当前和未来的国家经济建设带来重大经济、社会效益的地质找矿的重大成果,这是发展社会主义经济建设的迫切需要。三十多年来的地质工作成果,为组织地质找矿的重大突破奠定了良好的基础。湖南地质找矿重大突破的方向是:重点开展铅、锌、锑、金、银、稀士、媒成气、硼矿、片状高岭土、原生金刚石及轻质建材原料;长沙—株洲—湘潭地区环境地质工作;对经济建设具有重大意义的其它地质工作。实现湖南地质找矿重大突破的对策是:增强找矿意识;遵循地质找矿重大突破的方向,积极调整地质工作布局;深化改革,运用经济杠杆,引导地质找矿实现重大突破;采用先进地质工作手段,推动地质找矿的重大突破;充分发挥地质科技人员的作用。
