The Hannover World Cup Stadium, formerly the Niedersachsenstadion, was completed in 1954 and home to the 96 Hannover club since 1959. After nearly 50 years of ups and downs, by hosting the World Cup Dongfeng, Hannover city government in January 2001 decided to make a complete renovation of the stadium in Lower Saxony and conducted an open tender. Of the total four bids, two were redevelopment plans and the other two were new stadium plans. In December 2001, the redevelopment plan was finalized.
