This article reveals the history of the open-cast mining machinery AC variable frequency static control drive system for nearly 10 years, especially in mining power shovels and step electric shovels. Commenting on the performance of some drive systems from the standpoint of productivity and production costs, the overall achievements of the original design principles envisioned in the 1970s were evaluated. The article reviews the current state of technology and recent structural improvements.
