为满足网络容量不断成长的需求,网络厂商陆续推出各种新的技术,有些技术正在发展之中。在技术发展的同时,由于校园网络带宽需求愈来愈高,网络也愈来愈复杂,因而为网络管理人员提供有效的管理工具就变成厂商的重责大任;这些管理工具必须解决问题处理、网络管理、容量规划等问题。第一个解决高带宽需求的骨干网络技术是FDDI。虽然FDDI可以分成数个网络区段,但一般认为,FDDI扩充的过程并不是很顺畅,因此现在几乎没有什么地方采用FDDI的骨干系统。
