Objective To explore the role of serum lipids, lipoproteins and apolipoproteins in the development of diabetic retinopathy. Methods The data of blood lipids, lipoproteins and apolipoproteins in 89 diabetic patients were summarized. The results showed that plasma total cholesterol (CHO), high density lipoprotein (HDL), apolipoproteins APOB, APOC2 in diabetic retinopathy group were significantly higher than those without diabetic retinopathy (P <0.05). There was no significant difference between proliferative and non-proliferative phases. HDL, LPA, CHO, APOA1, APOA2 and APOC3 had positive correlation with fasting blood glucose (P <0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the blood glucose and blood cholesterol level of diabetic patients affected the occurrence and development of diabetic retinopathy. Conclusion Patients with blood glucose and blood cholesterol affect the development of diabetic retinopathy, so patients with diabetes should not only control blood sugar but also control the level of blood lipids
