This paper discusses the effects of rotation, vibration and plate compacting on the volume and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures. The use of image analysis techniques provides quantitative information on the orientation and distribution of aggregate in different layers. The results show that the aggregate particles are arranged circularly in the rotating and vibrating compaction specimens, which is more significant for large-size aggregates and aggregate with aspect ratio greater than 2. Plate compaction specimens showed irregular grain orientation. The mechanical test results show that the rotating and vibrating compacts have more remarkable ability to resist permanent deformation than the flat compaction specimens.
