The authors isolated the isomeric derivatives of C-9, C-12-octadecadienoic acid (linoleic acid) containing conjugated double bonds from roasted beef jelly and termed conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Synthetic CLA partially blocked the mouse epithelial carcinoma induced by 7,12-dimethyl [a] anthracene and the development of anterior gastric tumors induced by benzo [a] pyrene. CLA has been isolated in human serum, bile, and duodenal fluids and CLA sources in human body fluids are unclear.
