宜昌地区是我国新兴的重要柑桔生产基地。在党中央的“以粮为纲,全面发展”的方针指引下,柑桔生产得到迅速发展。1971年,全地区柑桔栽培面积已达6万多亩,产量达到15万担。当前一个重要工作,就是开展柑桔果实的产地贮藏,减少腐烂损耗,延长国内外供应时期。早在1965年以来,在党的号召下,柑桔产地贮藏得到了很快的发展。仅秭归一县,每年产地贮藏的柑桔达到50万斤以上。但由于青、绿霉病和褐色蒂腐病为害,产地贮藏腐烂损耗很大。
