Time: December 17, 2008 Venue: Professor Z, Chinese Painting Department, Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts Z: Some time ago, I had a meeting in Beijing and the theoretical community put forward the proposition of “three hands.” I think it is better than that of the Chang’an School “Two hands ” advocated a step forward. Chang’an painting school advocates advocate “one hand to the tradition, one hand stretched to life ”. This is a summary of the experience of the previous generation of painters, their slogan, embodies their understanding of the limitations. Now put forward the other hand, that is, on the basis of the first two hands put forward “one hand extended to foreign countries.” This formulation, I think, has a special significance in the present era.
