Introduction Triterpenes and steranes in crude oils and their sedimentary rock extracts are well-known biomarker compounds derived from the organic parent material in sedimentary basins. These compounds are distinguished by the fact that they are quite stable during diagenesis and can therefore be used to distinguish between different source rock and crude oil. The purpose of studying these compounds is to examine the relationship between source rock and crude oil, as well as crude oil and crude oil, which can provide important information for the displacement and accumulation of crude oil and maturity, and should be applied to petroleum exploration. In recent years, the application of this technology has developed very rapidly. Some scholars have developed a variety of methods in this area and obtained interesting results.
