黄泥岭村是丽水市遂昌县西部湖山乡的一个小山村。出了遂昌县城,在一条弯弯曲曲的盘山公路绕上一个多小时,就到了湖山乡。从湖山乡沿着山路再继续走上一个小时,就到了湖边。黄泥岭村就在湖的对岸。从湖的这边坐船到那一边,大概还需要半个小时的时间。周明瑞每隔几天就会从湖上往返一次。周明瑞是湖那边的黄泥岭村的乡村医生,而他的家则在湖这边的乡上。周明瑞过湖去,有时是回家,有时则是湖对面的村里人慕名打电话给他,请他去看病人。
