皑皑雪原,金戈铁马;小桥流水,西厢风月。北宋国力不够强盛,其文明却为周边民族所倾慕,东北契丹、西北党项,后来的女真,或争得一角,或入主半壁江山,但最终为中华民族所融入,同时也为中华文明又增添了新的色彩。辽是契丹族在我国北方建立起来的一个具有相当规模的政权,它与五代同时开始,又和北宋几乎同时结束。作为少数民族的统治,辽王朝雄踞于长城内外,占有中国半壁河山。虽然与中原地区常年征战,但在政治、经济、文化等方面,它却深受着中原汉文化的影响。
