我省山区、丘陵面积占总面积的80%以上。据历史资料记载,在远古时代,大部分地方都分布着茂密的森林草地。西山地区除一些高山大川之外,是一个平坦肥沃的高原,沟壑很少。许多地方曾是“杂树交荫”、“云垂烟接”、“翠柏烟峰、清泉灌顶”。不少河流还可泛舟、水运。汉武帝刘彻曾多次来山西,在他的《秋风辞》中,就有这样的句子:“泛楼船兮济汾河,横中流兮扬素波”。说明当时汾河水很深,可以行驶大船,扬起白色的波浪。
