In September 2000, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) allocated US$1.82 million to the National Natural Product Research Center (NCNPR) at the University of Mississippi to fund research on the performance, safety, and efficacy of herbal supplements. Dr. Clark, NCNPR director, pointed out: “In the United States, millions of people use food supplements, which are used in quite large amounts and have a wide range.
