Seymour Benzer, a neuroscientist at the California Institute of Technology in the United States, and Corol Miller, a neuropathologist at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical School, recently reported a class of markers for human brain cells. The two researchers found that monoclonal antibodies against the Drosophila nervous system can also bind to a specific group of cells in the human brain. Miller and Benzer anticipate that their findings might help map human brain tissue based on the biochemical functions of the cell and study the molecular basis of certain neurological diseases. Miller and other neuroscientists have tried other methods to identify subpopulations of brain cells, but they face many difficulties because there is hardly any good way to label the cells separately. Most brain markers used today are well-known substances such as nerve mediators and receptors that are found in many different types of cells.
