耶律楚材(1190—1244),字晋卿,契丹族人。其父曾在女真贵族建立的金朝作尚书右丞相,深受汉族文化的影响,给楚材取名和字的根据,就是《左传》里有“楚之有材,晋实用之”的名句。楚材三岁丧父,后从母学诗书,刻苦攻读,精通经史,旁通天文历法,善作诗文,少年成才,远近闻名。在汉族文化的熏陶下,楚材树立了治国安邦的雄心壮志,养成了刚直清廉的可贵品质,为他后来建功立业奠定了基础。
