沙眼是一种討厌的慢性眼病。得了这种眼病,就会經常感到好像有灰沙进入眼里一样难受,甚至眼睛红肿,睫毛倒卷,视力逐漸减退,严重的还会双目失明。因此,如何战胜沙眼,就成了科学研究工作中的重要課题。 現在,我們已經认識到,沙眼是由一种肉眼看不見的、比細菌还要小得多的病毒引起的。这种沙跟病毒一般是通过病人的手,通过洗臉工具如毛巾、臉盆等傳播开来的。近年来,北京市眼科研究所的同志們对这个問題做了很多研究。結果证明,要是把病人用过的毛巾或洗臉盆,用滾开的沸水澆一澆,就可以把沙眼病毒杀死;毛巾和臉盆用后晾干或晒干一小时,也能把沙眼病毒杀死;肥皂或肥皂粉虽然不能杀死沙眼病毒,不过,由于它們去污的效力很大,用它們来洗手、洗毛巾,仍然有助于减少传染沙眼的机会。假使用药物消毒,70％的酒精,只要半分钟就能杀死沙眼病毒。此外,他們也确定了一些治疗沙眼的有效的药物。这些方法看来容易,但是,要找到这些方法可不容易呀。半个世紀以来,科学家們从来沒有能够痛痛快快地作出这样的确切的答复。因为,过去沙眼病原究竟是什么都没有弄清楚。要是你和北京市眼科研究所的同志們談起这些防治沙眼的办法,他們一定会告訴你,他們所以能够提出这些办法,全亏得我国科学家們辛勤劳动,成功地分离出了沙眼病毒。而沙眼病毒的分离是經过了一段曲折而艰巨的过程的。
