潼关始设于东汉末,当时设在关中盆地东端,南倚秦岭、北近黄河的海拔550米黄土台原上(今陕西潼关县港口镇东南杨家庄周围一带)。潼关之名.据郦道元《水经注·河水篇》:“(黄)河在关内,南流潼激关山,因谓之潼关。”其实,在东汉顺帝即位之初,弘农郡华阴县东就有一处潼亭,地当后来的潼关附近(《后汉书·杨震传》),其后还有“戎骖纠结,尘斥河、潼”之说(《后汉书·皇甫张段列传》),所以,潼关之名倒很可能得自潼亭、潼水(或称潼谷水)这样的地名。
