自贡是恐龙之乡。70年代初期,在自流井釜溪河畔的伍家坝就发现大量恐龙化石,引起了有关人士的关注。当时由于自贡缺乏专业人员,只好由重庆市博物馆发掘研究并装架、陈列于该馆,仅留给自贡一条“荣县峨眉龙”综合骨架,后来这具标本在自贡市盐业历史博物馆内陈列,才使自贡人民第一次有幸看见了在自己生活的这块土地下沉睡了一亿多年的远古爬行动
