The San Francisco municipal government office building has been linked to Pacific Bell Optical Network as part of a $ 15 million city-county modern long-distance communications network. By the end of 1987, the municipal communications system would connect around 80 lots via fiber optics, copper cables, microwave transmission media and even infrared transmission media. San Francisco may be the first municipality to use its own fiber-optic equipment, choosing 16 fiber-optic stranded optical cables but initially using only 4 twisted-pair fibers. Tom Buckle, director of San Francisco’s Bureau of Long-distance Communications, said that while the cost of a $ 175,000 connecting line is about 10% more expensive than a copper cabling line, due to its additional features and increased resistance to breakage
