[US Nuclear Weekly reported on June 22, 1995] Officials said Japan’s National Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC) approved a subcommittee’s recommendation on June 19: The use of mixed oxidation in a conventional light water reactor (LWR) MOX fuel without changing the current standards and guidelines. This eliminates administrative barriers to the use of new fuels. The NSC quickly notified the government’s reactor safety review committee about the approval, which will evaluate and approve the use of MOX fuel by nuclear power plants one by one. However, utilities will have to obtain the consent of local authorities before using MOX fuel. MOX fuel approved by NSC is based on design
