The technology for converting carbohydrates into high value-added materials such as pulp, sugar monomers and ethanol is already ripe, but deep-processing techniques for lignin are in urgent need of improvement. At present, lignin is almost completely used for burning. The use of new technologies to convert lignin to high value added compounds can significantly improve the economic viability of biomass refining. The article describes the use of thermochemistry to separate lignin from lignocellulosic feedstocks and convert lignin to liquid fuels, hydrogen, and aromatics monomers. At the same time, possible applications and developments of products based on lignin were evaluated, and possible policy interventions by policymakers.
