According to Singapore’s Science and Technology Symposium, October / November 1998, Singapore companies are still investing more R & D investment in the long term regardless of the economic downturn. This is clearly reflected in the country’s healthy R & D investment (GERD) growth in 1997 and its commitment to industrial R & D investment in the first eight months of 1998. According to the 1997 Singapore R & D Survey from March to July this year, the GERD in 1997 amounted to S $ 2.1 billion, while its research scientists and engineers (RSEs) increased by 11% 11,300 people, or about 60 scientists and engineers per 10,000 labor force. The private sector continues to be the largest contributor to GERD in the country, investing S $ 1.31 billion, or 63% of GERD, while the private sector also promised in 1998 to continue investing S $ 1.1 billion. It is expected that these inputs will reach 3 to 5 S $ 5 billion to be recovered during the year and 1,400 RSEs positions created.
