“大师”的称号会成为一个问题,恐怕是中国当代美术界独有的现象。把这个独有现象作为一个专题来讨论,基于下述两个原因。 一、“大师”是当下美术界使用频率最高的词汇之一。新闻媒体、艺术掮客、政府官员、艺术家和一些早已丧失责任感的批评家们都在任意挥霍这个词汇,以致于使它过于廉价,已呈泛滥成灾之势。顶着“大师”的招牌招摇过市,已成为美术界一道令人啼笑皆非的风景。这很令人感慨,西方文艺复兴时的大师也未超过10位,以此算来,中国这么多大师是可以搞它个十次。八次文艺复兴运动了。面对如此糟糕,混乱的局面,请一些有识之士对此问题进行审视、批判和厘清,不仅是这个专题讨论成立的原因,也是它的目的。当然,我们希望这种讨论是重建中国美术大师价值标准的开始,也是当下“大师”泛滥现象消失的开始。这就是我们这个专题讨论的现实意义。 二、20世纪美术已成为历史,在对20世纪美术的总结和评估中,我们面临着一个不可回避的课题,即,怎样为20世纪的中国美术大师定位,构成20世纪中国美术大师的价值包括哪些方面,哪些美术家可毫无愧色地站在美术大师的位置上?在某种意义上讲,对20世纪美术大师的估价和定位也就是对20世纪美术的估价和定位。因此,这一课题暗含了对20世纪美术思潮、美术运动、美术教育、
