In order to promote the development of track and field in all countries in the world, the IAAF has decided at the 31st Montreal Congress since 1976 to run the Olympic track and field competition and hold the World Cup in 1977. The Cup will be held every two years. During the year or the year before the Olympic Games, if the World Athletics Championships meet in the competition year, the World Cup will no longer be held.
