After the peaceful settlement of the Xi’an Incident, the Kuomintang realized that the Chinese people were overwhelmed by the wave of resistance to Japan and was forced to abandon its attempt to annihilate the Chinese Communist Party by force. Instead, it sat down at the negotiating table and negotiated with the CPC on the issue of anti-Japanese cooperation. Before and after the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the two parties held a series of secret talks successively in Xi’an, Hangzhou, Lushan and Nanjing in order to establish an anti-Japanese national united front during the period from February 8 to the end of September 1937.
