Plasma renin activity and aldosterone concentrations were measured in 164 patients (20-89 years old) with essential hypertension and 40 healthy people of different ages. The results showed that the plasma renin activity and aldosterone concentrations of hypertensive patients in both young and old groups both had significant changes, which were related to the severity of the disease. Plasma renin activity is elevated or normal in type 1 elderly hypertensive patients, whereas plasma renin activity is low in type 2 elderly hypertensive patients, but aldosterone concentrations are significantly elevated. Therefore, the first type of treatment should be given β-adrenergic blockers, while the second type of patients should be given aldosterone competitive antagonist.
