The U.S. Journal of Science magazine reported in January 1989 that the U.S. Department of Energy announced plans to build the world's largest particle accelerator and superconductor super collider at 40 kilometers south of Dallas, Texas. When the Reagan administration finally approved construction two years ago, the super-collider project seemed to have wide-ranging support. Collider accelerator pipe circumference of 85 kilometers, enough to wrap up most of New York City. The accelerator can collide protons with a total energy of 40 × 10-12 electron volts. This energy is 20 times the energy that Tevatron, the world's largest accelerator currently used at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, can achieve. Other more powerful Tevatron accelerators may come on stream in the mid-1990s. The Soviet Union is building a 3 × 10 ~ (12) electron volt proton collision
