The monologue came to fruition thanks to a crucial, dramatic change for me in the summer and fall of 1978. The change has affected my later life. The point is not that it made me change from an engineer to a historical geographer, but that it made me realize that it was not possible to have scientists and engineers alone in the world we wanted to transform. It is quite a coincidence that I embarked on the path of historical geography and thus related to the study of cultural history, history of geography and other heresy.
