兰岭级指挥舰的主要使命任务是担负两栖战舰艇的指挥任务,于1965～1966财政年度批准建造,共造两艘,命名为“兰岭”号(LCC-19)和“惠特尼山”号(LCC-20),分别于1970年和1971年服役。1987年兰岭级指挥舰完成了现代化的改装,1996～1997年又拆去了部分舰载武器装备。“兰岭”号标准排水量为16790吨,满载排水量18372吨。“惠特尼山”号标准排水量为16100吨,满载排水量18646吨。该级舰舰长194米,舰宽32.9米,吃水8.8米,最大航速23节,续航力13000海里/16节。舰员编制821人,指挥参谋人员253人。
